The BRICS countries are rich in mineral and agricultural resources. In terms of mineral resources, the BRICS countries have a wide variety of minerals as well as huge reserves, which almost cover all kinds of mineral raw materials needed for the development of modern industry; while in terms of agriculture, BRICS countries have accounted for more than half of the world's gross agricultural product. However, the BRICS countries are still at the relatively low end of the global production value chain. There is a general lack of digital and smart system in mining and agricultural production in BRICS countries, resulting in not only wasting a lot of manpower and natural resources in mining and agricultural production, but also having limited production efficiency and difficulty in ensuring production quality. In order to narrow the gap between BRICS and the developed countries in the new industrial revolution era, it is crucial to make a step change from the traditional way of resource intensive development to innovation driven development, which presents considerable challenges and opportunities to the BRICS countries.
The integration of mining and agricultural production with AI (Artificial Intelligence), HPC (High-Performance Computing) and 5G technology is still in early stage. With the wealth of manpower and resources, demands of exploiting ICT (Information and Communications Technology) and HPC technologies for industrial restructuring and upgrading, the BRICS countries have great potential to catch up and even lead in this strategically important area. The proposed project will develop a Digital Twins Innovation Platform (DTIP) as a part of BRICS Innovation Cooperation Cloud (BICC) by integrating the emerging technologies such as cloud-edge computing, AI, HPC, 5G communication and cyber-security technology, AR/VR (Augmented/Virtual Reality), Internet of things, robotic and automation control technology etc., and will establish an open source ecosystem firstly in the areas of smart mining industries and integrated precision farming.
DTIP will provide opportunity to develop and prototype smart scheduling solutions based on ontologies and multi-agent technology and integrated with above mentioned advanced ICT technologies. Such innovative AI solutions can be applied for adaptive management of resources for mining factories and precision farms. The result will be better efficiency of resources, reduce of anthropogenic emissions, etc.
It will significantly strengthen the BRICS Partnership on New Industrial Revolution by producing spotlight results in digital economy and green
economy and promote high-quality development of BRICS economies.
